Sometimes the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected. When this happens, the infection must be removed with root canal therapy (also called endodontic therapy) to save the tooth. The nerve tissue and blood vessels are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned with tiny files and irrigating solutions. The decontaminated canals are then filled with a filling material. Root canal therapy both removes the infection and protects the decontaminated tooth from future infection.
